The Role

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a team of administrators and ensuring the operational efficiency of the department.  The Import Manager will be accountable for the service provided to all import accounts within the department, as well as for the support and development of the employees, ensuring the department operates in a professional manner in compliance with all applicable regulations.

 

The Responsibilities and Tasks

 

  • Manage and ensure the quick resolution of entry and account issues, and implement corrective actions to avoid repetition of errors
  • Audit import files for regulatory compliance, accuracy, and correct billing
  • Ensure compliance reference materials (regulations and directives) and operational procedures are current, complete, readily available, and followed by the employees
  • Conduct regular department meetings to review operational activities and inform employees of regulatory or procedural changes
  • Communicate department events and issues to upper management and peers
  • Employee management, including but not limited to the following:
    • Ensuring adherence to company policies and guidelines
    • Addressing any personnel matters or concerns
    • Resource scheduling and PTO approval
    • Hiring, retention, and corrective discipline (in conjunction with the Office Manager and Human Resources)
    • Annual evaluations, performance & development, and training
  • Participate and contribute in management meetings
  • Monitor, report, and manage profit and expenses within the department
  • Assist Accounting in invoice collection
  • Engage in continuous education opportunities provided by John S. James Co., as well as off-site seminars, webinars, or industry events (minimum 20 hours of certified education annually)
  • Assist the Sales Team in developing new accounts
  • Manage inventory of supplies and office equipment
  • Other tasks as directed by the Office Manager and Import Department
  • Travel and/or remote work may be required as needed

 

Qualifications

 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in customs brokerage and import operations
  • Customs Broker’s License required
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills
  • Strong inter-personal attributes including high ethical standards, as well as an understanding of the business implications of decisions
  • Outstanding organizational and time-management skills
  • Strong computer literacy (including MS Office and entry filing software)
  • Attention to detail
  • Regular and predictable attendance
