In a recent decision, the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) concluded that aluminum extrusions imported from a range of countries, including China, India, and Mexico, do not harm the U.S. industry. This ruling comes after the U.S. Department of Commerce identified that these imports were being sold in the U.S. at prices below fair market value and were subsidized by the governments of China, Indonesia, Mexico, and Turkey.
The Commission’s decision was split, with Commissioners David S. Johanson and Jason E. Kearns voting against the notion of injury, while Chair Amy A. Karpel supported it. Commissioner Rhonda K. Schmidtlein did not participate in the vote. As a result, no additional tariffs or duties will be imposed on these aluminum products, allowing them to continue entering the U.S. market without extra financial burdens.
The comprehensive report, titled “Aluminum Extrusions from China, Colombia, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam,” will be available by December 10, 2024, under USITC Publication 5560. This document will provide detailed insights and the Commission’s findings from the investigation. It will be accessible on the USITC website.
Who Are the USITC?
The United States International Trade Commission (USITC) is an independent, nonpartisan federal agency that plays a crucial role in U.S. trade policy. Established in 1916, the USITC provides expert analysis and information on international trade issues to the President, Congress, and other policymakers. The Commission investigates the impact of imports on U.S. industries, adjudicates intellectual property disputes, and enforces trade laws to protect against unfair practices such as dumping and subsidies. With a team of skilled professionals, the USITC ensures that U.S. trade policies are informed, fair, and effective.
