Foreign-Trade Zone

A Foreign-Trade Zone is a secure area usually located in or near a Customs Port of Entry where foreign and domestic merchandise may be moved.  The area is considered legally outside of the Customs territory of the United States.  Customs duties and excise taxes are due only at the time of transfer of foreign merchandise from the FTZ for U.S. consumption allowing businesses to potentially defer, reduce or eliminate duty on imports.
